Karpathos

Karpathos is the second biggest of the Dodecanese-islands and can be reached by boat or by plane. There are regular inland flights offered by Olympic Air and Sky Express.

In order to really get a ‘taste’ of this beautiful island it would be great if you stayed there for at least a few days. Karpathos has twelve villages and the so called ‘capital’ of the island is Pigadia (translated into English ‘the wells’) will impress you with its architecture that differs in many ways from what you see on other Greek islands. It is situated on the southeastern part of the island and was built on the ruins of the ancient city Posidion. The acropolis of Posidion and the so called Cyclops walls around the city are still partially intact.

Agia Fotini & Poseidon's cave

Less than 2 Km outside of the city and near Afoti beach you will discover the ruins of a 1500 years old Basilica, the church of Agia Fotini. It was discovered and reconstructed by it’s ruins in 1972 and was most probably built upon ruins of an ancient temple in the 5th or 6th century AD.

Another sight worth your visit is situated in the area of Miloi and is the natural Cave of Poseidon or Poseidon’s Cave. The cave was used in ancient times as a temple of worship and was dedicated to the gods Aphrodite and Poseidon. It is situated about 2 Km inwards from the city of Pigadia.

Arkasa, Finiki

The second largest town and popular vacation resort is the city of Arkasa, named after the ancient city Arkesia and is situated 16 km south-westwards. There are still a few ruins of the ancient city to be viewed on the Palaiokastron rock. Between the remains of the old Byzantine basilic of Arkasa you will discover exquisite mosaic’s, big part of which are preserved in the archaeological museum of Rhodes. About 1.5 Km from Arkasa is the small village of Finiki with a picturesque small port and a cozy feel with restaurants viewing the sea. If you like to visit the beach in this area try the beach of Agios Nikolaos.

When on Karpathos it will certainly pay off hiring a ride for a few days so that you can drive around and discover not only the sea-side resorts, but also the more hidden villages between the mountains such as Menetes , Mesochori, Aperi, Olympos and Diafani.

Greek food and drinks

Karpathos offers a variety of typical dishes such as Lachanopita (dough filo filled with various local herbs and greens), Makarounes (fresh pasta with sweet onions and cheese) lam or goat stew and off course fresh fish, that can be found at very democratic prices. Here are a few suggestions:

Hop to...Kasos island!

Kasos Island is one of the hidden jewels of the Dodecanese. It is the southernmost island of the Aegean Sea and lies on the South end of Karpathos island. The inhabitants of Kasos are very proud, especially because in 1824 almost all 7000 inhabitants were murdered during the Greek war of independence from the Ottoman Empire. You could consider it a miracle that there actually are locals to be found!
